The Azores Family Experience Tour 902...
(Not bookable on the Web - Please phone reservations on 0844 477 0451)
The Azores are attractive to all ages and are an interesting destination for a family holiday. Typically we find families comprising three generations from grandparents down to children.
The Family Experience we have shown below is designed to appeal to the typical family and includes some soft adventure. Should it not be entirely suitable we are able to tailor-make itineraries according to your needs. Please call our travel consultants for an individual quotation. Tailor-made itineraries are normally more expensive than the bespoke version detailed here.
An important feature of the itinerary will be the planting of a tree for posterity which will act as a tribute to the participating family and a memorial for generations who may visit in the future.
The experience is accompanied by a knowledgeable guide
Day 1 |
Arrive Ponta Delgada, São Miguel and transfer to the Royal Garden Hotel (page 49) for 4 nights room and breakfast. There will be a briefing from your guide and the remainder of the day will be at leisure. |
Day 2 |
Full day tour to Furnas with a cozido lunch with drinks included. Furnas is a spa town and one of the largest thermal areas in the world. It also has a 30 acre Botanical Garden which is one of the most beautiful and diverse in Europe. There is a natural spring-fed hot water pool in the gardens and there will be time for a swim before lunch.
You will visit the caldeiras (hot springs), in which the traditional cozido lunch is cooked. The return to Ponta Delgada is via a scenic drive along the north coast visiting a tea plantation en route. The Azores is the only place in Europe where tea is grown. |
Day 3 |
Full day whale and dolphin watching tour including lunch and drinks at the rustic Garajau restaurant. NB: children under 5 years are not accepted on the whale-watching tours.
It is possible that departures before May and after October may have a half day tour (page 42) instead of full day, in which case lunch is not included. |
Day 4 |
Day at leisure for individual exploration. Late afternoon you will be collected from your hotel by a horse-drawn carriage and taken on a scenic route for dinner (included in the cost) at the quaint Estalagem Senhora da Rosa (page 47). After dinner your carriage will take you back to the Royal Garden. |
Day 5 |
After breakfast you check out of the Royal Garden Hotel and your guided tour continues across the island to Ribeira Grande. During this day you will plant your tree and also participate in a hike along marked paths. Your guide will discuss this with you and agree a route and timing which is suitable to your needs and ability. Typically a hike lasts about an hour and a half and should include Caldeira Vehla, situated on the slopes of Lagoa do Fogo volcano. This is where a warm water river joins a steaming geyser to form a natural pool under the leafy forest of tree ferns. There will be time to swim in the inviting pool.
After lunch in Ribeira Grande (included in the cost) you will be taken to the Bahia Palace Hotel (page 50) for 3 nights half board. |
Days 6 & 7 |
These are free days for you to enjoy the beach and pool of this excellent hotel. |
Day 8 |
Morning transfer for your homeward flight to the UK or continue your stay in The Azores. |
The cost in £ is based on 2 adults and 2 children under twelve sharing a Family Room at the Royal Garden Hotel and a Junior Suite at the Bahia Palace Hotel, with meals and excursions/activities as described in the text.
Prices are available for other combinations including 2 adults and 1 child; 1 adult and 1 child; 2 grandparents.
