Vila do Maio is a sleepy little town where not much happens, but there are perfectly good restaurants and some welcoming local bars, as well as a superb beach where the colourful local fishing boats arrive daily with their catch. It is said that the people of Maio are known for their honesty and cheerful hospitality.

Tourism is only just starting here and although there are a few small foreign developments of private apartments and houses there is at the moment only very simple pension and guesthouse accommodation available in Vila do Maio, and one small hotel 5km from town.

The guesthouses usually offer simple twin or double-bedded rooms with a fan, TV, shower and w.c, with breakfast included.

The Hotel Bela Vista is 5km from town, situated by a wide beach, and offers air-conditioned, bungalow-style accommodation with bathroom (shower), TV, mini-bar and a small verandah. There is also a swimming pool and a restaurant. Arrangements are on a room and breakfast or half board basis.
