La Gomera holidays are amongst the few places in the world that have the natural wealth of a circular volcanic island lying at the centre of the westernmost Canary Islands between La Palma, El Hierro and Tenerife.
The scenery of La Gomera is surprisingly varied and full of contrasts with impressive gorges, green valleys, grand rock monoliths, magnificent palm groves and the Garajonay National Park (highest point 1487m), which covers approximately ten per cent of the island and offers an ecological treasure of crystal clear waters and lush laurel forests. This area has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
La gomera holidays are a paradise for walkers and nature lovers, with Valle Gran Rey, Valley of the Great King, one of the most popular walking bases. Starting as a steep ravine it widens out towards the sea with hundreds of terraced fields clinging to the sides of the valley. Bananas, papaya and citrus fruits grow in profusion here.
Another unique aspect of this mysterious island is the strange whistling language used by the inhabitants to communicate from mountain to mountain.
There are culinary specialities too, such as ‘palm honey’, made with the sap taken from the countless palm trees, rabbit in a spicy sauce, salted potatoes served in their skins and various fish and shellfish dishes.
The principal resorts are Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. Both resorts are linked by a regular and inexpensive ferry service, which also serves the capital town of San Sebastian, and Los Cristianos on Tenerife
Valle Gran Rey comprises 3 distinct areas: Vueltas is the harbour area with ferries, boat excursions and harbour-front bars and cafes, some restaurants and some shops.
La Playa has a good beach of dark sand and also water-front restaurants and bars. La Calera is a residential area away from the sea.
Valle Gran Rey offers opportunities for trekking, biking, boat trips including whale and dolphin watching as well as diving, swimming and relaxation.
Playa de Santiago is smaller with some restaurants and shops, although most visitors are attracted there by the excellent Hotel Jardin Tecina.
Overall, La Gomera offers a relaxed and unsophisticated holiday in a destination of great natural beauty and charm. The absence of major beaches, and consequently large resorts, means rural tranquility is still in tact here.
